I Quit

If you’re shocked by that subject line, know two things:

  • I’m not actually quitting, don’t worry.
  • That shocked feeling you just felt is just like like when someone walks into your office, asks to speak to you and closes the door. And it's exactly what I’m trying to end with my new book, Rethinking Two Weeks Notice, which publishes today.

Rethinking Two Weeks’ Notice replaces the outdated paradigm of leaving jobs with two weeks' notice with a playbook that prioritizes transparency, mutual respect, and better endings for both leaders and employees. This expansion of my TEDx talk and HBR article on this topic gives a step-by-step playbook to overhaul employee departures, ensuring smoother transitions, an engaged alumni network for businesses, and better career paths for employees.

If you’ve ever been on the wrong side of a sudden professional breakup—either as the person getting notice of a resignation or the person being abruptly dismissed—I highly encourage you to read this book. Here’s everywhere it’s available:

When it’s time to move on, it needs to happen with transparency, trust, and ideally with enough time for both parties to land on their feet. This book is the guide to making that happen and represents what I believe could be the new playbook for how people leave organizations—I hope you’ll check it out.

You can watch their mortified reaction. Internet sleuths deduced that the two people in question were likely the CEO (who’s married) and Chief People Officer of a company, who clearly weren’t expecting the spotlight. I was...

Summer is quickly approaching, and I am excited for some travel with friends and family, as well as time with our new puppy. I’m hoping to rest and recharge before the home stretch of the The Compass Within launch, which kicks into full gear this fall. Before taking some time off, I wanted to turn the tables and get your feedback on a couple questions.
