The Business That’s Beating The DTC Swoon

Hi Everyone,

In the Northern Hemisphere, the second quarter of the year is when people have, for centuries, planted seeds for the crops that will sustain them later in the year. Take that as a metaphor: whatever you’re trying to achieve this year, the planning (or procrastination) phase should be done, or that goal is probably not happening this year.

For me, the last few months have been all about the launch of Elevate Your Team. Thank you to everyone who supported the launch of the book. I just have one final ask (I promise): if you got the book and enjoyed it, I would love if you’d leave a review on Amazon. It only takes 3-5 minutes and is the biggest help to introduce new readers to the book. My goal is to get past the 100-review mark with this newsletter, as this is the biggest group of early buyers. I will also pick five reviews and mail you a signed copy.

With the book in the rearview mirror, here’s what I’m excited about these days.

Winning the DTC Revolution

Economic headwinds have been in the headlines for months now and many of the companies hurting most are unprofitable direct-to-consumer businesses, as I wrote in a January Friday Forward titled More & Less.

But one company that’s weathered the storm and kept growing is ButcherBox, a DTC meat business that Mike Salguero started as a side project in 2015 and has grown into a thriving business with over half-a-billion in 2022 revenue. Mike recently joined me on the Elevate Podcast to talk about how he did it, and our interview is definitely worth a listen.

Core Values Course Updates: Live Coaching

In December, I decided to test a limited-time offer of live group coaching for course buyers. Dozens of people joined the coaching calls, which featured great conversations and several breakthroughs. Based on the feedback and results from these sessions, I am currently in the process of upgrading the course. Soon, I’ll be rolling out an updated version, featuring an additional month of weekly content that will help you through the core value discovery and sharing process.

In May, I’ll be debuting this new content and raising the course price to $105. I’ll also be offering a guided version, which includes live coaching, for $195. If you’d like to get the course before the price goes up, you can do that now and still get access to the new content when it’s ready. Or, if you’d like to be notified when the live coaching option is available, just click this link—no other action is required.

On My Bookshelf

The past few months have brought a lot of great work from authors I really admire. Don’t miss these books:

  • Wonderhell by Laura Gassner Otting: This excellent book covers one of my favorite topics: how to build a definition of success that actually fulfills you, rather than doing what impresses others.
  • From Strength To Strength by Arthur C. Brooks: This is one of the best books I’ve read lately about spiritual capacity. It’s an excellent resource for aligning your life around your purpose, and it’s especially helpful for people who are nearing the midpoint of life and looking for their next step.
  • Impact Players by Liz Wiseman: This has been my most frequent recommendation of 2023. If you’re looking to win in a tough economic environment, this book will teach you how.
  • Song of Significance by Seth Godin: I was lucky to get an advanced copy of this book, which launches May 30. Seth is one of the best writers and thinkers in business today, and his new book is a must read.

I hope you continue to stay safe and healthy.

-Bob

If you’re shocked by that subject line, know two things: I’m not actually quitting, don’t worry. That shocked feeling you just felt is just like like when someone walks into your office, asks to speak to you and closes the door. And it's exactly what I’m trying to end with my new book, Rethinking Two Weeks Notice, which publishes today. Rethinking Two Weeks’ Notice replaces the outdated paradigm of leaving jobs with two weeks' notice with a playbook that prioritizes transparency, mutual...
